The True Colours Hall of Fame

People are always asking me about the worst and best kits I’ve ever seen. I get a little bored talking about the worst kits and would much rather focus on the best! With that in mind, and partly inspired by an email from Andrew Rockall that listed his top 10 (thanks Andrew!), I’ve decided to run a series in the Kit Cupboard section of the site that features, in no particular order, my favourite kits of all time. The Hall of Fame will feature what I consider to be the very best designs worn worldwide throughout the past 40 years.

Many of them are also still available from the excellent VintageFootballShirts.com as well – these are not modern retro versions, but original replicas.

To read the first in the series click here. If there’s any shirts you feel deserve to be in the hall of fame then please contact me or leave a comment. Thanks!

  1. I’m not a Newcastle fan, but their first set of adidas kits are both personal favourites. The proportions seem right on the home kit, while the maroon/blue away kit was unusual without being jarring.

  2. I think this is a great idea and would love to see the Everton Umbro kit from the same period (86-89) or a sleightly earlier Le Coq one, from our glory days. Though my personal favourite is the Luton Town Adidas shirts from the 80’s with the ‘Bedford’ sponsor, particularly 84-87. The orange/black third shirt from that period is my all time favourite, gorgeous shirt. Love 80’s Adidas.

  3. Going international for a mo, Denmark 86, Holland 88 are obvious candidates…love em or hate em, they’re certainly classics.
Also agree re the Newcastle and Everton ones.

  4. I think Manchester United’s 1992-1994 home kit was a classic and it was fitting the club won the league after 26 years wearing it.The all black away kit from the same period will also be remembered because nobody had worn an all black kit before.

  5. Sorry about the all black kit.The Italians wore all black in the 1938 world cup ( v France ) but I don’t think anybody tried it in the English League or Premiership before United.

  6. Thats a good call Athanasios – the Man Utd home kit was a classic. Excellent suggestion Rich – Holland 86 was a gem! Tim, Ned – those NUFC kits are very much amongst my all time favs. And Alex, you’re right about the forgotten Luton kits of the 90s, some good ones there. Thanks everyone!

  7. Man Utd away 1978 please, also Italy 1982,was it made by le coq sportif? the tracksuits were, and the numbers were similar to the spurs ones from the same period but the kit never had le coq motifs on?
